Education at stake

O PoN! Pedagogical Kit is didactic material specially developed to accompany the game "PoN! The Island of the Armadillos" in both formal and informal learning environments. It expands the universe of the game and its questions through additional dynamics and materials, providing a more playful methodological approach to dealing with complex themes such as climate change, biodiversity, and their social and cultural interconnections.

The aim is to enhance the educational impact of the game by offering pedagogical tools that help educators and students build new knowledge. The students will be made aware of climate challenges and find possible paths for environmental action, in line with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4, 13 and 17.

Developed by German Matthias Löwe, with consultancy from Brazilians Tainá Felix and Jaderson Souza, the 28-page kit was born out of an intercultural process. It provides a rich combination of international and local perspectives, ensuring relevance and effectiveness in the Brazilian educational context.

Applications

We suggest including the PoN! Kit as a study and action project in your school or cultural space, in an interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary way. It can be taught by professionals from various fields - from the arts to maths, from philosophy to biology. Games are an integral part of many children and teenagers' lives, so why not incorporate them as teaching tools? The PoN! Kit facilitates this mediation, helping to build an environmental pedagogical project in a fun and conscious way.

Impact inside and outside the classroom

With more than 14,000 people impacted and more than 70 events held between 2022 and 2023, the project has left its mark on communities all over Brazil. PoN! has not only captivated students, but has also been recognised internationally, winning the Games for Change Latin America 2022 in the Impact category. And the success doesn't stop there: the game and its pedagogical kit have been officially integrated into the curriculum of the Santos public school system, has been approved by the Colombian Ministry of Education, and is in the process of being integrated into the "Colombia Learns" platform. Through its partner Goethe-Institut, the material is being promoted in its pedagogical network in Colombia, Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador and Peru, demonstrating that the union between technology and education can transform environmental awareness.

Testimonials

The mechanics are intuitive for students. The scenarios and content emphasise the Brazilian context. They've taken care to develop a situated proposal. As my degree was in the Humanities, I have previosuly Latour and I think the game is a fun way of introducing the author's work and developing socio-environmental skills. The game as it stands is very good. In terms of teaching, I really enjoyed the workshop, which brought together students and teachers, providing an exchange of knowledge and cultural experience between generations. I was curious to find out how the game was received and used in other contexts. In particular, its adoption by teachers.

The PoN - Island of the Armadillos game is transversally linked to the competences and skills set out in the National Common Curriculum Base (BNCC) and, consequently, to the São Paulo Curriculum, which are our national and state curriculum references, respectively. It has the potential to contribute to the development of different objects of knowledge, both from components such as Science, Biology, Geography and Modern Foreign Languages, and in an interdisciplinary way. As it is a collaborative game and proposes reflection and debate on current issues, it also promotes the development of socio-emotional skills, contributing to students' all-round education. The pedagogical kit contains valuable guidance for educators and various proposals for applying the game, in order to take into account the different realities of schools and the diversity of the teaching and learning process.

Pamella de Paula da Silva Santos, Pedagogical Coordinator, São Paulo State Department of Education

On the 22nd of September, our school held an excellent workshop with the presentation of the game PoN - Island of Armadillos. Teachers and students left the workshop with great expectations, knowing that through the game, they can broaden discussions and learning about environmental issues in their teaching activities.
